UTM templates are pre-configured sets of UTM parameters that you can reuse when creating links. They save time by eliminating the need to manually enter the same UTM parameters repeatedly, ensuring consistency across your campaigns.
What Are UTM Templates?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) templates allow you to define common UTM parameter combinations that you use frequently. Instead of typing the same source, medium, campaign, and other parameters every time you create a link, you can select a template and apply those parameters instantly.
UTM Parameters Explained
UTM templates can include the following parameters:
Source (utm_source)
Identifies which site sent the traffic (e.g., "facebook", "newsletter", "google").
Medium (utm_medium)
Identifies what type of link was used (e.g., "email", "cpc", "social").
Campaign (utm_campaign)
Identifies a specific product promotion or strategic campaign (e.g., "spring_sale", "product_launch").
Term (utm_term)
Identifies search terms (typically used for paid search campaigns).
Content (utm_content)
Identifies what specifically was clicked to bring the user to the site (e.g., "logolink", "textlink").
Referral (utm_referral)
Identifies the referral source for the link.
Benefits of Using UTM Templates
UTM templates provide several advantages:
- Time savings: Create links faster by reusing pre-configured parameters
- Consistency: Ensure uniform UTM parameters across all your links
- Team collaboration: Share templates with your team for consistent tracking
- Error reduction: Minimize typos and inconsistencies in UTM parameters
Creating UTM Templates
To create a UTM template:
- Navigate to the Folders page and select the UTM Templates tab
- Click the "Create template" button or use the keyboard shortcut (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
- Enter a descriptive template name (e.g., "Facebook Campaign", "Email Newsletter")
- Fill in the UTM parameters you want to include in the template
- Save the template and start using it when creating new links
Using UTM Templates
When creating a new short link or dynamic link, you can select a UTM template from the dropdown menu. The template's parameters will be automatically applied to your link, and you can modify them if needed for that specific link.
Tip: Create templates for your most common campaigns and channels. This will significantly speed up your link creation workflow!
